Ava DuVernay born August 24 72, at Long Beach in California. DuVernay began to develop her creative and artistic side in her early years, thanks to Aunt Denise. The aunt who was a night shift nurse, let her pursue art literature and the theater in the daylight. DuVernay grew up with her mother who was socially aware and taught her how to utilize the arts as a means of expressing herself. DuVernay spent her summers in Lowndes County Alabama, where DuVernay's father was born and raised. The father of DuVernay's mother recalled Civil Rights marches that occurred on the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the close-by town Selma in Alabama. Her summers in Selma, Alabama would be the inspiration for her later an animated film on the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay was a graduate from Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California, in 1990. After graduating she attended her first year at the University of California Los Angeles which she graduated with qualifications in English as well as African American studies. DuVernay began to produce for broadcast journalism while she was still in college. Her first job was working as an assistant at CBS News in the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembers being assigned to observe the house of one member of the jury and go through their garbage. Her tasks left her disappointed by journalism and she decided to shift her focus towards the field of publicity. DuVernay was immediately hired from college to be a junior publicist at an unassuming studio. She started The DuVernay Agency, her PR firm, in 1999. Apart from PR, the agency also created a variety of marketing and lifestyle platforms, such as The Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
